How
Different combinations of drugs are used. The drugs used for a medical abortion may cause bleeding that is significantly heavier than a period and there may be intense cramping.5 It may take up to 2-24 hours for the pregnancy to pass, but the bleeding or spotting can last up to two weeks. The embryo may be expelled at home.
Drugs Used2
Mifeprex (mifepristone) is usually taken first, either at the abortion clinic or at home. Next, misoprostol (Cytotec) is typically taken 24-48 hours after the first drug. Mifepristone is taken orally, and misoprostol can be taken in several different ways, including orally or vaginally. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, which supports the progression of the pregnancy, and misoprostol expels the pregnancy from the uterus.

- not knowing if the drugs are the right ingredients or in the correct dosage
- lacking medical supervision when complications or questions arise
- Skipping essential screenings pregnancy complications. Under the FDA’s regulations for medical abortions, certified healthcare providers need to be able to determine the accurate dating of the pregnancy and to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy.1
- Taking the abortion pill too late in pregnancy without realizing it is also possible if you skip dating through ultrasound. Even a week or two can make a difference in taking the pill, as failure rate increases the closer you get to 10 weeks7 (the FDA only approves use through 10 weeks)1
. North Care Women’s Clinic believes that the best way to gather information about the pregnancy is through an ultrasound.6 Click here for more information on the safety of online abortion.
